Jabal AlFil, Elephant Rock, is exactly what its name promises: a sandstone outcrop about 52 metres tall whose shape, worn by wind and water over millions of years, looks uncannily like an elephant with its trunk planted in the sand. It is the most recognisable natural landmark in AlUla and, unlike Hegra, you can visit it on your own without booking.
The setting has been landscaped with care. A wooden boardwalk leads from the car park into a wide sandy bowl, where low sunken seating areas and fire pits are spread out so that nobody blocks anybody's view. As dusk falls the rock is softly lit, music plays quietly in the background and the whole place takes on the feel of a relaxed open-air lounge.
When to visit
The site opens in the late afternoon, generally from around 16:00 until midnight (later at weekends in some periods), and the official advice is to come at sunset. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the sun goes down: you get the warm red glow on the rock while it is still light, then the floodlit silhouette against a sky that fills with stars. Opening hours shift with the season and during Ramadan, so check Experience AlUla before you go.
- October to March: the best months, with mild evenings that turn chilly after dark.
- Summer: still open, but the heat only eases well after sunset.
- Festival weekends: busier; come early to get a seat by a fire pit.
Getting there
Elephant Rock is around a 20-minute drive north-east of AlUla Old Town via Highway 70, with free parking at the entrance. There is no public transport, so you will need a hire car, a taxi or a tour. Many day tours finish here at sunset after Hegra or Old Town; compare options on GetYourGuide. If you are driving yourself, our car hire guide explains what you need to rent a car in Saudi Arabia.
Food and drink
Small cafés and food stands operate on site in the evening, serving coffee, juices and light meals, and the seating is free to use. Prices are higher than in town, which is the cost of the view. Climbing the rock itself is not allowed: it is protected, and the soft sandstone erodes easily. Photography is welcome everywhere.
Combine it with
A classic AlUla day starts with a morning tour of Hegra, a rest in the heat of the day, a late afternoon look at the mirrored walls of Maraya and sunset here. Finish with dinner in AlUla Old Town, where the restaurants stay open late. To find a base nearby, search Booking.com for hotels and desert camps across the valley.
