Qatar shares Saudi Arabia's only land border on the Qatari peninsula, and since the border reopened in 2021 travel between the two has been straightforward. Doha has become one of the Gulf's great cultural capitals, with landmark museums, a restored old souq and a long, walkable corniche. It combines well with the Eastern Province, and many travellers simply connect through Doha's Hamad International Airport on their way to the Kingdom.

How to get there from Saudi Arabia

By road, the crossing is Salwa on the Saudi side and Abu Samra on the Qatari side. From Dammam or Al Khobar it is roughly a four- to five-hour drive to Doha; from Riyadh, allow around seven hours via Al-Ahsa. Qatar asks travellers driving in to pre-register their trip and vehicle on the Hayya platform and to buy compulsory Qatari motor insurance online in advance. Rental cars need written permission from the hire company to cross. On the Saudi side, expect biometric checks.

By air, Qatar Airways, Saudia and flynas connect Doha with Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and other Saudi cities; Riyadh to Doha takes around one and a half hours. Qatar Airways has also flown seasonally or year-round to AlUla and Red Sea International Airport. Compare fares on Trip.com.

Entry rules for visitors coming from Saudi

  • GCC citizens need no visa.
  • Citizens of more than 100 countries qualify for visa-free entry on arrival, with the length of stay depending on nationality.
  • Residents of GCC countries, including Saudi Arabia, can apply for a GCC-resident entry permit through Hayya, usually with conditions on residence-permit validity and profession.
  • Other travellers can apply for a tourist e-visa through Hayya.

Qatar requires visitors to hold health insurance from an approved provider, and some routes require a hotel booking and return ticket. Check visitqatar.com and the Ministry of Interior's portal before travelling. A unified GCC tourist visa has been announced and is expected, but had not launched as of October 2026. Make sure your Saudi visa allows re-entry if you are returning.

Tip: If you are driving, complete Hayya pre-registration and the motor insurance online a few days before you leave; it saves a lot of time at Abu Samra.

Highlights

  • Msheireb Downtown and the Katara Cultural Village for architecture and galleries.
  • Khor Al Adaid, the "inland sea" where dunes meet the Gulf, close to the Saudi border; go with an experienced 4x4 operator.
  • Al Zubarah, a UNESCO-listed former pearling town in the north-west.

How it pairs with a Saudi trip

Drive from Al-Ahsa or Al Khobar to Doha for two or three nights, or use a Qatar Airways stopover to visit Doha on the way in or out. Combined with Bahrain, it makes an easy Gulf circuit; see the GCC grand tour.

Good to know: Regional security events in 2026 have caused short-notice flight cancellations at several Saudi and Gulf airports. Check your airline's flight status and your government's travel advice shortly before you travel.
