Al-Ahsa is a green island in the eastern desert. Fed by underground springs, its oasis holds well over two million date palms, making it one of the largest in the world, and people have farmed here for thousands of years. In 2018 UNESCO inscribed "Al-Ahsa Oasis, an Evolving Cultural Landscape" on the World Heritage List, recognising its gardens, canals, wells, historic buildings and archaeological sites. The two main towns, Hofuf and Al-Mubarraz, have a warm, unhurried atmosphere and some of the best traditional food in the Kingdom.

Al-Qarah Mountain

The star attraction is Al-Qarah Mountain (Jabal Al-Qarah), a flat-topped sandstone outcrop east of Hofuf riddled with narrow canyons and caves. Even in summer the inner passages stay noticeably cooler than the air outside, which is why locals once used them to store food. A visitor centre, lit paths and a viewpoint at the top make it easy to explore; there are also pottery workshops in the village at its foot, where clay pots have been thrown by hand for generations.

Tip: Visit Al-Qarah in the late afternoon, then watch the sunset over the palm groves from the summit area. Bring a light torch for the darker passages and wear shoes with grip.

Hofuf: souqs and palaces

In the heart of Hofuf, Qaisariya Souq is one of the oldest covered markets in the region, with lanes selling bisht cloaks, spices, dates, incense and household goods. Nearby, Ibrahim Palace (Qasr Ibrahim) is a fortress with a domed mosque from the Ottoman era. North of the city, Jawatha Mosque marks the site of one of the earliest mosques in eastern Arabia, linked to the first years of Islam. Al-Mubarraz has traditional houses and the Sahood Fort.

Palms, springs and dates

Drive or cycle along the oasis roads to see working farms, irrigation channels and the springs that sustain them. Al-Ahsa is famous for its Khalas dates; in late summer and autumn the date season brings markets and auctions, and farm shops sell dates, date syrup and sweets all year. Beyond the oasis, the Yellow Lake and the dunes towards the Empty Quarter offer desert scenery, and the historic port of Al-Uqair lies on the Gulf coast. A local guide helps you see more in less time: see Al-Ahsa tours.

Getting there

Al-Ahsa is easy to reach without a car. Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) trains on the Riyadh–Dammam line stop at Hofuf; from Riyadh the journey takes around three hours, and from Dammam about an hour and a half. Book on sar.com.sa. There are also domestic flights to Al-Ahsa International Airport, and by road it is roughly 330 km from Riyadh. Locally, taxis and ride-hailing apps cover the towns, but a hire car or driver is best for the oasis and Al-Qarah.

Where to stay and eat

Hofuf has a good choice of mid-range and international hotels, plus a few heritage guesthouses. Compare Al-Ahsa hotels. Try Hasawi rice, a reddish local grain, along with fresh dates, Arabic coffee and sweets; our food guide explains regional dishes.

Good to know: Al-Ahsa gets very hot from May to September. October to March is the most comfortable time for walking and exploring. Many sites close for prayer times and keep shorter hours on Fridays.

Combining Al-Ahsa

Al-Ahsa fits neatly between Riyadh and Dammam and Al Khobar, so you can stop for a night on a rail journey across the country.
