Bahrain is an archipelago of islands in the Gulf, linked to Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province by one of the region's most famous pieces of engineering. Small, friendly and easy to get around, it has more than 4,000 years of history, from the ancient Dilmun civilisation to the pearl merchants of Muharraq. For anyone based in Dammam and Al Khobar, it is a natural day trip or weekend away.
How to get there from Saudi Arabia
The King Fahd Causeway, opened in 1986, runs about 25 km from Al Khobar across the sea to Bahrain, with the border posts of both countries on an artificial island halfway across. A toll is payable, and cars need insurance valid in Bahrain, which can be bought online in advance or at the causeway. Rental cars need the hire company's written permission to cross. On a quiet day the drive from Al Khobar to central Manama takes around an hour, but on Thursday and Friday evenings and public holidays queues can add hours. Coaches and private transfers also run between the Eastern Province and Manama.
By air, Gulf Air, Saudia and flyadeal link Bahrain International Airport with Riyadh and Jeddah, among other Saudi cities; the Riyadh flight takes just over an hour. Compare options on Trip.com.
Entry rules for visitors coming from Saudi
- GCC citizens enter with a national ID card or passport.
- Many nationalities, including UK, EU, US and Australian citizens, can get a visa on arrival, including at the causeway, or apply in advance for an eVisa at evisa.gov.bh.
- Residents of Saudi Arabia with other passports may qualify for a GCC-resident eVisa or a visa on arrival, usually with conditions on how long your residence permit remains valid and on your profession. Check eligibility on the official eVisa site before you set off.
If you are a visitor to Saudi Arabia, make sure your Saudi visa allows you to come back in; the tourist eVisa is multiple-entry. Residents need a valid exit and re-entry visa. A unified GCC tourist visa has been announced and is expected, but had not launched as of October 2026.

How it pairs with a Saudi trip
Bahrain works best as a one- to three-night extension from the Eastern Province, after visiting Ithra and the Al-Ahsa oasis. Flying into Bahrain and crossing the causeway is also a handy way to start a Saudi itinerary in the east. For bigger loops, see our GCC grand tour.
